Concealed Carry

The Sheriff’s Department in Vernon County has been issuing Missouri “Concealed Carry” permits (CCW), for almost four years, to those residents that qualify and desire a Concealed Carry permit.

To qualify for the permit you must first be over the age of 23 Years and a resident for six months!  Next, you must pass an approved Firearms Safety Training Course Such as the one in Vernon County , operated by Jens Barclay (he is in the Telephone directory).  I believe his fee is $100.00.

Next you must make application to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department.  I believe the fee is $100.00 for three years.

You must pass a background check by the Sheriff’s Department, he will pass the information along to the Highway Patrol for a fingerprint check, they will then pass your information along to the FBI for a background check.  If everything goes well, the Sheriff shall issue your permit within 45 days.

So folks, as you can tell, not everyone gets a permit.  To this date, 248 permits have been issued in Vernon County with 28 applications after October 1, 2008.  A special thanks to Tina at the Sheriffs Department for digging up the numbers for me!  I don’t think the department would run very smoothly without her!

An Amendment  to the Concealed Carry has been added.  That states among, other things, (as I remember) that anyone protecting themselves cannot be sued if they shoot a “bad guy”!  This Amendment is called the “Castle Doctrine”.  This also states that, you no longer need to get a permit from the Sheriff’s office to purchase a handgun, as explained by The Missouri Attorney General.

Another factor to the CCW is that it is honored by some states and is not honored by others.  It is the responsibility of the permit holder to research what states have a “Reciprocity Agreement” with the state of Missouri, before traveling with a concealed weapon through or vacationing in that state.

In addition, this same law allows any person over the age of 21 to have in their vehicle a concealed weapon.  WITH QUALIFICATIONS!

There are places that you cannot carry a concealed weapon.

In conclusion:  If you are a bad guy and you either live in Vernon County or you are planning to come to Vernon County , be aware:  We have two very fine Law Enforcement agencies here.  The Vernon County Sheriff’s Department headed by long time Sheriff Ron Peckman and the Nevada Police Department headed by Public Safety Director Gary Herstein.  They are at the reins of two very professional Law enforcement agencies.  If you think you are coming to “Jerk-Water USA” you are sadly mistaken!  If you are going to continue on your criminal ways you just may get accommodations in our new County Jail.

If you come here to practice your criminal ways I suggest that you do so with the businesses that proudly display a “No firearms allowed”, you surely will be the only one there with a gun.  Or will you?  It is called “CONCEALED CARRY”
